20 Things to do in Bali
By Two World Backpackers
Bali is a destination that we loved, and we are sure that we will go back sooner or later, but more than 15 days. Although we went 12 days and we had plenty of time to see many things and even to wander and sunbathe on the beach.
If you plan to travel to Bali and do not know what you can do there, in this post, we will tell you 20 things you can do on the island of the gods.
Let’s begin!
- Stay in different cities on the island, and when you visit Ubud, you need to stay in a villa overlooking the rice fields. It is gorgeous to wake up with those views!
- If you have a lot of experience with motorcycles, rent one to move around Bali at your convenience. The traffic on the island is horrible, and it can take you hours to drive from one place to another by car. If, on the other hand, you do not have much experience with motorcycles, then we recommend hiring a taxi driver per day, as we did on our trip since none of us has ever driven one.
- Try the local gastronomy. We always went to the warungs, which are the local restaurants with great and cheap food.
- If you like trekking, we recommend you to go up to Mount Batur to see the sunrise. The excursion is approximately € 45 per person and includes breakfast at the peak at dawn.
With any doubt, it is an unforgettable experience!
- Don’t miss a sunset! It is our favourite moment of the day, and enjoying these sunsets on any of its beaches is magical.
- Bali is full of rice fields everywhere, but the biggest and most famous are the ones of Jatiluwih Rice Field and Tegalalang Terrace. We went to the Tegalalang as they are very close to Ubud.
- Wander the streets of Ubud and visit its market. In it there are many shops and stalls of crafts, food and clothes. We recommend you visit the Ubud Royal Palace where they also offer traditional Kecak dance shows.
- Visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, where more than 700 monkeys live and also in this natural sanctuary, there are several temples. Careful, keep an eye on your belongings and food!
- Enjoy a Kecak dance performance at sunset at Uluwatu Temple. One of the most beautiful temples in Bali located on the top of a cliff.
- Swing in one of the many “Bali swing” that are everywhere. Some beautiful spots with swings that we recommend you are: in the Tegalalang rice fields, in many waterfalls, and even on some beaches as the ones in the Gili Islands.
- In Bali, you will find many waterfalls, but our favorite is the Tukad Cepung waterfall that is inside a cave. Besides, on sunny days the sun’s rays enter, giving the photo a special touch. Other waterfalls that we liked are the Kanto Lampo, Tibumana, Tegenungan, and the Git Git Waterfalls.
- The Uluwatu temple is one of the most beautiful in Bali. However, among our favorites are also the Tanah Lot Temple (located on an islet in the middle of the sea), Pura Ulun Danu Bratan (located on Lake Bratan), Tirta Empul Temple (famous for its holy spring water where the Balinese Hindus people go for a purification rite), Goa Lawah (a temple with a cave full of bats), and Goa Gajah (known as The Elephant Cave).
- To enter the temples, the use of sarong is mandatory for both men and women. It is a long piece of fabric that is worn like a skirt to cover the legs, and they sell them everywhere super cheap.
You can buy one and keep it as a souvenir or in most temples they give you one for free when you enter.
- Treat yourself and enjoy a Balinese massage in Ubud.
- If you like to surf or want to learn, Canggu is the best area for it.
- If you also want to party, Kuta is your area! Although we have not been as we preferred more tranquility.
- Escape to the Gili Islands! There are three of them: Meno, Trawangan and Air, and they all have gorgeous paradisiacal beaches with crystal clear waters.
- Do snorkel or dive and delight yourself at the seabed there! Swim with turtles, thousands of colourful fish and corals. There are many dive companies on the islands, and there are many tours for group or private snorkelling.
- Enjoy the beaches of the Gili Islands. For us they are the best beaches we have ever seen. There are also bars with ottomans and deck chairs on the beach where you can enjoy the sunset with a beer or a homemade smoothie in hand.
- Finally, discover the island of Nusa Penida. It is not as touristy as Bali, but it offers panoramic views, beaches with crystal clear waters, and spectacular landscapes such as Kelingking Beach, among others.
